Sleeping Positions & Their Effects on Health

What position do we sleep most often? It turns out that this is a very important question. Getting enough sleep is the most important thing – but we know that the way we sleep can also affect our health?

Sleeping on our back, arms at our side, is generally considered the best position to sleep on the health of the spine, and that’s good for the neck, too, as long as we do not use too many pillows. However, as a rule back sleepers snore more than in any other position, and sleep apnea is strongly associated with sleep on their backs.

Let’s take a look at Eight Common Sleep Positions and what they do to our body.

Biotechnology Will Be Bigger Than IT Sector says Sam Pitroda, Advisor to Prime Minister, Govt. of India.

Sam Pitroda, advisor to the prime minister on public information infrastructure and innovation, Wednesday hailed Biotechnology as being "pervasive" and said the sector has the capacity to be bigger than IT.

"Biotech could be bigger than IT (Information Technology) in terms of Export," he said.

"(With Biotech) we can expedite the process of development in Pharmaceuticals, Environment, Processes and many other things,"

Pitroda said at an event marking the launch of the first phase of a plan developed by the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC), which aims to foster innovation and techno-entrepreneurship in Indian universities.

The initiative, in collaboration with the Biotechnology industry, leverages the University Innovation Cluster (UIC) and Cluster Innovation Centre (CIC) model recommended by the National Innovation Council (NIC).

The UIC model seeks to build an innovation network with multiple stakeholders and CICs, identify and forge partnerships with institutions of interest, further facilitating the innovation culture.

Under the initiative, an innovation centre in Biotechnology hosted in the university will be the nerve centre to manage the UIC activities.

As part of the project, five Indian universities - Anna University, Chennai; Punjab University, Chandigarh; Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore; University of Rajasthan, Jaipur and University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad - have been chosen to participate in the first phase.

"Each university is a leader in Biotechnology, who has got the right connections with the industry. So, we will set up a pre-incubation centre there which will act as the nerve centre for budding student entrepreneurs," a member of the team said.

The cluster innovation centre in Biotechnology will give students technology mentoring, along with mentoring in entrepreneurship development and support in new venture creation.

"We call it a cluster because these universities will network with all other institutes and industries in the region," she said.

The initiative, which intends to create a industry ready workforce, is mainly meant for selected post-masters and post-doctoral student entrepreneurs.

Why We Should Drink Warm Lemon Water In The Morning

Instead of getting a cup of coffee, why not replace it with a warm water lemon drink?
Below are the good factors to consider.

1. Boosts Our Immune System:
Lemons are high in vitamin C, which is great for fighting colds. They’re high in potassium, which stimulates brain and nerve function. Potassium also helps control blood pressure.

2. Balances pH:
Drink lemon water everyday and we’ll reduce our body’s overall acidity. Lemon is one of the most alkaline foods around. Yes, lemon has citric acid but it does not create acidity in the body once metabolized.

3. Helps with Weight Loss:
Lemons are high in pectin fiber, which helps fight hunger cravings. It also has been shown that people who maintain a more alkaline diet lose weight faster.

4. Aids Digestion:
Lemon juice helps flush out unwanted materials. It encourages the liver to produce bile which is an acid that required for digestion. Efficient digestion reduces heartburn and constipation.

5. Is a Diuretic:
Lemons increase the rate of urination in the body, which helps purify it. Toxins are, therefore, released at a faster rate which helps keep your urinary tract healthy.

6. Clears Skin:
The vitamin C component helps decrease wrinkles and blemishes. Lemon water purges toxins from the blood which helps keep skin clear as well. It can actually be applied directly to scars to help reduce their appearance.

7. Freshens Breath:
Not only this, but it can help relieve tooth pain and gingivitis. The citric acid can erode tooth enamel, so we should monitor this.

8. Relieves Respiratory Problems:
Warm lemon water helps get rid of chest infections and halt those pesky coughs. It’s thought to be helpful to people with asthma and allergies too.

9. Keeps you Zen:
Vitamin C is one of the first things depleted when we subject our mind and body to stress. Because lemons are chock full of vitamin C.

10. Helps Kick the Coffee Habit:
After taking a glass of warm lemon water, most people suggests of less craving for coffee in the morning.

Why It Has To Be Warm Water Not Cold?

How To Be Attractive in 9 Easy Steps

Health Benefits of Cashews ( Kaju )

The cashew tree is native to Brazil, where its fruit is considered a delicacy. In the 16th century, the Portuguese introduced them to India and some African countries, where they are now also grown. What we call the cashew nut is actually the seed of this fruit. Cashews are rich in iron, phosphorus, selenium, magnesium and zinc. They are also good sources of phytochemicals, antioxidants, and protein.

Benefits of Cashews

Cancer Prevention -
Cashews are ripe with proanthocyanidins, a class of flavanols that actually starve tumors and stop cancer cells from dividing. Studies have also shown that cashews can reduce your colon cancer risk. Their high copper content also endows the seed with the power to eliminate free radicals and they are also good sources of phytochemicals and antioxidants that protect us from heart disease and cancer.

Heart Health -
Cashews have a lower fat content than most other nuts and most of it is in the form of oleic acid, the same heart-healthy monounsaturated fat found in olive oil. Studies show that oleic acid promotes good cardiovascular health by helping to reduce triglyceride levels, high levels of which are associated with an increased risk for heart disease. Cashews are wonderfully cholesterol free and their high antioxidant content helps lower risk of cardiovascular and coronary heart diseases. The magnesium in cashews helps lower blood pressure and helps prevent heart attacks.

Hair and Skin Health -
Cashews are rich in the mineral copper. An essential component of many enzymes, copper plays its part in a broad array of processes. One copper-containing enzyme, tyrosinase, converts tyrosine to melanin, which is the pigment that gives hair and skin its color. Without the copper cashews are so abundant in, these enzymes would not be able to do their jobs.

Bone Health -
Cashews are particularly rich in magnesium. It's a well-known fact that calcium is necessary for strong bones, but magnesium is as well. Most of the magnesium in the human body is in our bones. Some of it helps lend bones their physical structure, and the remainder is located on the surface of the bone where it is stored for the body to use as it needs. Copper found in cashews is vital for the function of enzymes involved in combining collagen and elastin, providing substance and flexibility in bones and joints.

Good for the Nerves -
By preventing calcium from rushing into nerve cells and activating them, magnesium keeps our nerves relaxed and thereby our blood vessels and muscles too. Too little magnesium means too much calcium can gain entrance to the nerve cell, causing it to send too many messages, and leading to too much contraction. Insufficient magnesium leads to higher blood pressure, muscle tension, migraine headaches, soreness and fatigue. Not surprisingly, studies have demonstrated that magnesium helps diminish the frequency of migraine attacks, lower blood pressure and helps prevent heart attacks.

Prevent Gallstones -
Data collected on 80,718 women from the Nurses' Health Study demonstrates that women who eat at least an ounce of nuts each week, such as cashews, have a 25% lower risk of developing gallstones.

Weight Loss -
People who eat nuts twice a week are much less likely to gain weight than those who rarely eat nuts. Cashew nuts are indeed relatively high in fat, but it is considered "good fat." This is attributable to the ideal fat ratio in the nut, 1:2:1 for saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated, respectively, which is recommended by scientists for tip-top health. Cashew nuts contain less fat than most other popular nuts, including peanuts, pecans, almonds and walnuts. They are dense in energy and high in dietary fiber, making them a very valuable snack for managing weight gain.

10 Most Deceptive Foods that Everyone Thinks are Healthy But Are Not

1. Fruit Juice and Sodas
Fruit juice may be delicious, but it’s often loaded with even more high-fructose corn syrup than actual juice! High fructose corn syrup has been linked to increased cholesterol levels, blood clots, and impaired immunity. Sodas are no better as we all are well aware.

Fructose reduces the affinity of insulin for its receptor, which is the hallmark of type-2 diabetes. This is the first step for glucose to enter a cell and be metabolized. As a result, the body needs to pump out more insulin to handle the same amount of glucose.

The annual ‘Liver Meeting’ of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases which took place October in Boston reported results linking high intake of sugar (specifically fructose) to liver disease.

“The research team concluded that consumption of high fructose can have negative effects on liver through overfeeding, as well as damage the liver by inducing increased oxidative stress.”

2. Pasteurized Milk
Milk is touted as a healthy food and most people assume that it “does a body good.” But pasteurization destroys active enzymes and denatures the fragile proteins in milk. It also kills beneficial bacteria and lowers the vitamin content of your milk.

A Better Alternative?

Raw milk is milk that hasn’t been pasteurized. Why raw milk?

Supporters of raw milk say the pasteurization process kills most, if not all, micromilk2 Fake Food : Top 10 Most Deceptive Foods that Everyone Thinks are Healthy but Are Not organisms, including the beneficial ones that aid in digestion and metabolization. They also promote good health by crowding out bad bacteria and help prevent yeast overgrowth in the intestinal tract.

The Campaign for real milk says that raw milk comes from cows that are properly fed. Cows that eat green grass provide milk with nutrients like vitamins A and D. They argue that pasteurization enables the milk industry to raise cows in less-expensive, less-healthy conditions.

They also say that pasteurization destroys enzymes and diminishes vitamin content. Pasteurization, says the group, is associated with allergies, increased tooth decay, colic in infants, growth problems, osteoporosis, arthritis, heart disease and cancer. Many calves fed pasteurized milk die before maturity.

Raw milk will sour naturally due to the bacterial production of lactic acid and still be healthy, while pasteurized milk, which lacks the essential bacteria, will putrefy.

3. Bread
It is a Convenient food and tastes good, but not as healthy as you think. Whole grain or whole wheat means nothing.

Dark bread can still contain corn syrup & trans-fats and eating too much bread will make you fat.

Healthy Alternative?
Ezekiel Bread, but lower your bread intake.

4. Fast Food Salads
Yes, you went to that fast-food joint near your office for lunch, but all was not lost you ordered a salad! Most fast-food chains have jumped on the health bandwagon and are nowsalates offering salads, wraps and other healthy menu choices for just such nutrition-minded customers.

Contain sugar-laden salad dressings, croutons made from refined white flour or white floor pasta. In many cases you’re better off ordering a double cheeseburger than a chicken salad.

One of their more startling findings: McDonald’s Crispy Bacon Ranch Salad has more fat and calories and just as much cholesterol as a Big Mac.

Culprits that make good salads go bad are fried meats, additions like croutons and crispy noodles, bacon, and high-fat salad dressings. Many even have added sugar.

Healthy Alternative?
Make your own salads.

5. Cereal
Cold cereal seems like a convenient and healthy meal, but combined with pasteurized milk, it can be a bowl full of nutritionally damaging food. Cereal itself undergoes a process called extrusion that denatures its proteins (making them toxic) and destroys the grains’ naturally occurring fatty acids. The result is a nutritionally void carrier for sugar and sodium.

For more on cereal and healthy alternatives, read: The Four Major Health Risks of Conventional Grains and the Healthy Weight-Optimizing Grains to Choose Instead.

A Better Alternative?
Make your morning meal green! Try Vitality SuperGreen or a Good Morning Greens Smoothie to start your day off right.

6. Processed Cheese
Processed cheeses, especially individually wrapped slices, have little nutritional value. They are pasteurized and often have fillers and preservatives.

A Better Alternative?
Make Young Coconut Kefir cheese or on stage two of the Body Ecology diet, once your gut is populated with dairy-loving microflora, try cheeses made from fermented raw milk to flavor your salads.
7. Energy Drinks

Their labels say they contain various herbs, minerals and the amino acid taurine, specially designed to boost your energy by the time you reach the bottom of the can. But if you look at the ingredients, you’ll find that the main ingredients in most energy drinks are actually caffeine and sugar — making them hardly more than high-priced soft drinks.

Yet their glitzy designs and claims to improve your performance, concentration and reaction speeds seem to be working. In 2004, energy drinks overtook bottled water as the fastest-growing category in the beverage business. Similar products have even been introduced for kids as young as 4 years old.

A Better Alternative?
Drink healthier fluids like water or tea, and if you must have a jolt of energy, a good old-fashioned cup of black coffee will at least spare you the sugar.

8. Oatmeal
For many people who suffer wheat and gluten allergy or intolerance, oatmeal also becomes and unsafe option. While oats themselves do not contain gluten, they do contain a protein which is relatively similar and current farming techniques create concerns as well. It is not uncommon for a farmer to rotate his oat crops with his wheat, rye or barley crops from year to year, and millers often encounter kernels from volunteer wheat when processing the oats.

Oatmeal seems harmless enough and doesn’t actually contain gluten. But oatmeal can be unsafe if you have a wheat or gluten sensitivity2 because farmers often grow oats in fields that previously had grains like barley and wheat. The other grains can contaminate the oats and could be dangerous for anyone with gluten sensitivity.

A Better Alternative?
For a warm, convenient morning meal, try Body Ecology’s Hot Breakfast Porridge recipe.

9. Protein Bars
Protein bars now compete with candy bars in convenience stores and grocery aisles, but protein Fake Food : Top 10 Most Deceptive Foods that Everyone Thinks are Healthy but Are Not these quick snacks are not necessarily healthy. Many protein bars use soy protein and count sugars in their top 3 ingredients! Instead of offering you a healthy option, they actually contribute to fungal infections.

A Better Alternative?
Soaked almonds and other nuts are easy and delicious snacks for those on the go! Or try RenewPro for an energizing, gut-healing source of protein. You can mix it in water or even eat a scoop between meals. You’ll love the delicious taste of this truly healthy source of protein.

10. Whole Grains
Many foods from bread to breakfast cereals advertise that they are now made with whole grains.

Despite earlier reports discounting fiber’s role in colorectal cancer prevention, two recent studies say fiber from fruits, vegetables, and grains may indeed slice the odds of getting the disease. One study, surveying more than half a million people, found a 25 to 40 percent risk reduction from 30 grams of fiber daily (five to seven servings of fruits and vegetables). Fiber in food may be the key, since those earlier studies focused on fiber supplements.

If you have digestive problems or suffer some of the classic autoimmune reactions (e.g. allergies) consider the possibilities that grains may be problematical. Look at your family members and your family history for clues about dietary problems. Adjust the ratio of cereal grains to meat, vegetables, and fruits and see if the adjustment has physiological and psychological effects. In my opinion one should supplement with vitamins, minerals, protein, and free fatty acids. Above all, eat a varied diet and not too much of one thing.

Conventional whole grains lack vitamins and minerals, can be difficult to digest, and often cause allergenic responses, contributing to autoimmune disorders like Celiac disease.

A Better Alternative?
Grain-like seeds millet, quinoa, buckwheat, and amaranth are gluten free, do not feed candida act as prebiotics, have a calming effect and are full of vitamins and minerals.

Miracle Cure For Dengue

It could be a miracle cure for dengue. And the best part is you can make it at home.

The juice of the humble papaya leaf has been seen to arrest the destruction of platelets that has been the cause for so many deaths this dengue season. Ayurveda researchers have found that enzymes in the papaya leaf can fight a host of viral infections, not just dengue, and can help regenerate platelets and white blood cells.

Scores of patients have benefited from the papaya leaf juice, say doctors.

Papaya has always been known to be good for the digestive system. Due to its rich vitamin and mineral content, it is a health freak's favourite. But its dengue -fighting properties have only recently been discovered.

Chymopapin and papin - enzymes in the papaya leaf - help revive platelet count, experts say.

Kitchen Utensils Can Transfer Viruses !!

Cutting fruits and vegetables doesn't just leave a knife slick with juice and pulp; it can spread viruses to the knife if the produce isn't clean, according to a new study. Scientists already knew that bacteria could contaminate utensils in this way, but the new study is the first to look at hepatitis A virus and norovirus, the most common cause of foodborne illness in the United States. The findings could help food safety investigators pinpoint the source of foodborne illnesses and develop new methods to prevent outbreaks.

These findings could help food safety investigators pinpoint the source of foodborne illnesses and develop new methods to prevent future outbreaks. The researchers set up a test kitchen and developed techniques to strip viruses off knives and graters. They measured the amount of hepatitis A virus or norovirus transferred from contaminated honeydew melons, cantaloupes, tomatoes, strawberries and cucumbers.

Regardless of the material and the sharpness of the knife used, more than half of all samples transferred viral particles to the knife. Some combinations of viruses and produce were more likely to contaminate knives than others. Norovirus was transferred more often from strawberries and cucumbers than hepatitis A, while melons and tomatoes transferred more hepatitis A than norovirus. Similar experiments on viral transfer from carrots to a grater found cross-contamination the majority of the time.

The scientists then tested whether contaminated knives could transfer viruses to clean fruits and vegetables, finding that at least seven produce items could be contaminated by a single contaminated knife. The results indicate that foodborne viruses are just as likely to spread to utensils as bacteria are. Since other studies have shown that fewer than 20 norovirus particles are needed to make someone sick, the viral knife contamination could cause illness.

This data is useful for commercial kitchens, where many produce items bound for different meals are being simultaneously chopped. It’s recommended that people wash their hands and utensils in between chopping produce items.

Gene Therapy Can Protect Against HIV

An Introduced Gene Conveys Long-Lived Resistance To HIV Infection In Mice

Gene therapy, an approach most commonly explored for curing chronic genetic diseases such as cystic fibrosis, may also prove practical for disease prevention. In research published today inNature, scientists in California show that a single injection — which inserted the DNA for an HIV-neutralizing antibody into the muscle cells of live mice — completely protected the animals against HIV transmission.
The road to a vaccine against HIV has proved to be far longer than originally anticipated. More than 2 million adults are newly infected with HIV every year and, nearly three decades after the virus was first identified, researchers haven’t found a reliable way to prevent infection. The classic vaccine approach, which uses all or part of an inactivated virus to induce immunity, has yielded little success because HIV has managed to disguise most of the easily-recognised external structures that antibodies would target. Researchers have thus had a tough time finding a molecule that can induce even moderately broad responses against the virus in all its different mutations. So although it might sound extreme to use gene therapy as a preventative treatment for HIV/AIDS, the method could provide a much-needed alternative.

David Baltimore, a virologist and HIV researcher at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, and his colleagues used a genetically altered adenovirus to infect muscle cells and deliver DNA that codes for antibodies isolated from the blood of people infected with HIV. The DNA is incorporated into the muscle cells’ genome and programs the cells to manufacture the antibody, which is then secreted into the bloodstream. The tactic builds on earlier work by scientists at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in Pennsylvania, who in 2009 first described the effectiveness of this technique in preventing transmission of simian immunodeficiency virus, which is similar to HIV but infects monkeys.

As for the rationale for using gene therapy for HIV: “This is something way out of the ordinary, and it’s perfectly reasonable to say that there’s no reason to do it if there’s an alternative," says Baltimore. "But if there’s no alternative — and that’s where we’re at today — then we should be thinking of new ways to protect people.”
Dennis Burton, an immunologist at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California, who has developed a number of antibodies against HIV, agrees. “Obviously, the best thing of all is a vaccine. That’s a tried-and-tested method that carries very few risks. But if that doesn’t work, what’s our fall-back position?” he asks. “We have these antibodies, and we have them available now. If this works in humans, and that’s a reasonable supposition, you’d have something you can do now.”

Prolonged Protection

Baltimore and his colleagues tested five different broadly neutralizing antibodies, one at a time, in mice with humanized immune systems. Two of the antibodies, called b12 and VRC01, proved completely protective — even when the mice received doses of HIV that were 100 times higher than a natural infection. After 52 weeks, the levels of antibody expression remained high, suggesting that a single dose would result in long-lasting protection. “We showed that you can express protective levels of antibodies in a mammal and have that expression last for a long period of time,” Baltimore says. “It sets the stage for human trials.”
Providing patients with periodic doses of these antibodies throughout their lifetime would be safer than coaxing antibody production from muscle cells, but it would be far from cost-effective. The gene-therapy approach, by contrast, recruits muscle cells to act as antibody factories and could be administered using a single intramuscular shot.
Experts in the field are cautiously optimistic. “Mice and monkeys don’t always tell the truth. It’s a really interesting idea, and it should be assessed in clinical trials,” says Wayne Koff, senior vice-president for research and development at the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative in New York. “Until someone shows that we can make these broadly neutralizing antibodies with a [classic] vaccine, I think this is an important concept that should be supported.”
But both Burton and Koff caution that gene therapy comes with its own set of problems. Because the antibody DNA is permanently inserted into the genome, there’s no way to turn it off if someone has an immune reaction against the antibodies. But it won't be known whether such side effects exist until the method is tested in people, something that Baltimore aims to do in the next few years. The researchers at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, meanwhile, hope to get the first round of human trials of their technique started before the end of 2012.

Why Do We Dreams? The Reality Revealed

We had dreams many times in our life and always looking for the answer, Why do we have dreams? When we sleep, our physical body is resting and re-charging. Our brain encounter with millions of inputs in a day such as colors, passing bus/cars, animals, counting things, concentrating something, researching, events of the day, things we saw, felt, books read, programs watched, touched, doing many other things during your job, learning, and many more millions to count. Dreams are bound to how we form memories. For instance, if we are worried about exam, deeply involved in study thinking about question paper all the time. There is huge possibility, we will dream about getting low marks, bad results, not doing well in some paper. This is how the dreams work.

Informative Dreams: Some times we dream about our problem and it replies with the solution to it.

Nightmare Dreams: We get scary dreams due to psychic pressure.

Shape-Shifting Dreams: We experienced, the life in another animal body.

Ancestors Dreams: Communicating with close once who are no more in this world.

True Dreams: Dream the future, present or past, the reality of our life.

Older people saw dreams as portals for receiving wisdom from the gods. In modern era, it has been theorized that dreams were the “royal road to the unconscious”. Modern theories suggest it’s not as complicated as that. Dreams are a secret outlet for your repressed desires. Dreams are highly visual and often illogical in nature, which makes them ripe for the type of “out-of-the-box” thinking that some problem-solving requires, said Deirdre Barrett, a psychologist at Harvard University.

People Feel Sensations In Different Parts Of Their Bodies When They Experience Emotions

Where in our body do you feel it when we see the person we love?
How about when we feel angry or nervous?

Finnish researchers have made a topographical map of the body where we tend to feel emotions. The results they found were mostly consistent both across people and across the world.

The researchers used five different experiments to create the map, with all the evidence pointing to specific areas of the body where people feel emotion.

They used different stimuli to test what they felt in their bodies as they experienced 13 different basic and complex emotions.

“We often think the emotions are something that happen only in the mind, but there’s also lots of evidence suggesting that they also happen in our bodies,” said study author Lauri Nummenmaa, assistant professor in Cognitive Neuroscience at the Aalto University School of Science in Finland.

“Our data show bodily sensations associated with different emotions are so specific that, in fact, they could at least in theory contribute significantly to the conscious feeling of the corresponding emotion.”

The data was too conclusive to ignore: the connection between mind and body is strong.

For instance, our body goes warm and we feel happiness across our chest and hips when we’re happy but those areas dull when we feel sad. Anger and contempt we feel in our heads.

The Difference Between Boss and Leader

Poor Mentality VS Rich Mentality

What It Means To Be Poor ?

One day, a father of a very wealthy family took his son on a trip to the country with the firm purpose of showing his son how poor people live. They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family. On their return from their trip, the father asked his son, “How was the trip?”

“It was great, Dad.”

“Did you see how poor people live?” the father asked.

“Oh yeah,” said the son.

“So, tell me, what did you learn from the trip?” asked the father.

The son answered, “I saw that we have one dog and they had four. We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden, and they have a creek that has no end. We have imported lanterns in our garden, and they have the stars at night. Our patio reaches to the front yard, and they have the whole horizon. We have a small piece of land to live on, and they have fields that go beyond our sight. We have servants who serve us, but they serve others. We buy our food, but they grow theirs. We have walls around our property to protect us; they have friends to protect them.”

The boy’s father was speechless.

Then his son added, “Thanks, Dad, for showing me how poor we are.”

Too many times we forget what we have and concentrate on what we don’t have. What is one person’s worthless object is another’s prize possession. It is all based on one’s perspective. Makes you wonder what would happen if we all gave thanks for all the bounty we have, instead of worrying about wanting more.

Manners Before Knowledge

In Japanese schools, the students don't get ANY exams until they reach
grade four (the age of 10) ! Why?

Because the goal for the first 3 years of schools is NOT to judge the child's knowledge
or learning, but to establish good manners and to develop their character!

Yes, that's what our scholars taught us: Manners BEFORE Knowledge !

Should this method be implemented all over the world ?
